Now that many people’s finances are getting even tighter due to the recession, the idea of making money online is getting even more attractive, and one of the first things many people hear about is something called “affiliate marketing.” While there is a enough information out there to overwhelm most people at first, the basic concept is fairly simple.
Market research is the first step in the process.
First, you must research markets you are interested in. This is your most important starting point, and you can do this by finding out what your potential customers are looking for. This is the essence of “keyword research” – finding the actual words or phrases people type into search engines to find answers to their problems, and you can be sure that if you do not do your research, you will definitely regret it later.
By finding and using keywords that consumers are actively entering into the search engines, you will be able to help your websites and landing pages rank higher, generating a nonstop flood of organic, targeted traffic. The reason for this is most people are searching for specific content and by matching your keywords with that specific content you create extremely relevant search related content.
Keyword research doesn’t have to be a difficult task, however. Start with the free Google Keyword Tool, which can be found by searching for “Google keyword tool external,” and enter in a keyword or phrase that identifies the product or niche that you are interested in promoting as an affiliate. This step alone will save you a lot of time and money in the end.
Click on “get keyword ideas” to generate a list of keywords and gauge the competitiveness of the the market by taking a look at the number of times people are searching for your main keywords per month.
What you want to do is find a market with existing demand that also has existing competition and products readily available, but not so competitive that ranking highly is next to impossible.
What’s important here is that you remember there must be an audience for whatever you choose to market. Since you are an affiliate, your costs for entering a market are not very high, but it’s still a good idea to take the time to do niche research in order to avoid wasting your time.

Success in affiliate marketing, as is the case with any field of internet marketing, is dependent on a few fundamentals. Market research, which is to say both keyword research and niche research, is of primary importance.
With the recession making some serious dents in all our personal finances, the idea of making money online has become even more attractive, particularly to those of us with some motivation and business sense. When we begin searching online for possibilities, we come across the term ‘affiliate marketing’ fairly early on. There is far too much information available on the subject, and it can be confusing, but the basic concept is fairly simple. It’s important to clear away much of the fast talk, discover the basics, and begin working on a project of our own, rather than endlessly surfing through the promises and offers.
Market research is an important first step in the process of becoming an affiliate marketer. A good place to start is by researching the markets you are personally interested in. Starting from this point, you need to discover what your potential customers are looking for. This is essentially what “keyword research” comes down to–finding the actual words or phrases people type into their search engines to find answers to their problems, needs, or desires. This is extremely important research, and the outcome of your marketing attempts depends upon it.
By doing this research, finding and utilizing the keywords that buyers are actively entering into the search engines, you will help your websites and landing pages rank higher, and eventually generate a constant stream of organic, targeted traffic. Keyword research doesn’t have to be either difficult or expensive. There are several free keyword research tools available online, and a few free trials of rather expensive, but useful, tools and software as well.
But is not’s necessary to spend money to begin–the Google Keyword Tool, which can be accessed for free by searching for “Google Keyword Tool External,” is a good place to begin. When the page opens, click on ‘descriptive words or phrases,’ enter a keyword or phrase that identifies the product or niche you wish to promote as an affiliate into the appropriate box, and then click on “get keyword ideas” to generate a list of keywords. Scroll through these and look them over.
Gauge the competitiveness of the market by looking at the number of times people are searching for each keyword per month. You’ll likely get some good ideas on how to promote your affiliate product from this list.
Remember, though–competition is a good thing. You want to find a market with existing demand, and products readily available that you can sell as an affiliate marketer. In a market with no competition, you won’t be able to sell anything, either. It’s also probably best at first to stay away from highly competitive areas of the market, as it’s hard to rank highly in those. But it is important to remember that demand must exist or there’s no market for your products.
As an affiliate your marketing costs are not high in monetary terms, but taking the time to do keyword and niche research will save you much wasted time you could have spent marketing products that sell and make you money in your online efforts.
Affiliate marketing, or any sort of selling, online or offline, is based on a few fundamental elements. This hasn’t changed much over the years. Surfing around online, you hear wild promises of ‘secret’ or ‘insider’ tricks and tweaks that can only be learned by buying this ebook or that course. Believe me–I’ve spent more money than I want to think about chasing unfulfilled promises. Not that there isn’t good information on offer, too. But it’s only when I bent my head to the task of learning about keyword research and market research that I began to see some results. Start with the basics–and you’ll succeed.

Why does niche affiliate marketing have such a high failure rate? Is it because people do not work hard, or is it because they do not have what it takes?
I don’t believe either excuse qualifies as a legitimate reason for the increasing rate of failure. Most people who do niche affiliate marketing are very dedicated and committed to their work and nearly everyone has what it takes to make it as a big success.
So then what is it? Why don’t more people generate huge incomes?
If we take a look at what niche marketing is we may understand better why there isn’t an influx of success stories. A niche is a target market with specific needs wants and desires. Once you realize what your target market requires from you it’s easier to meet their needs.
However, most people don’t study their niche market enough to understand exactly who they are and what they want. Without a thorough rundown of their expectations it’s difficult to offer the right products and services.
Pricing is one of the most common mistakes. Even a website owner that gets scores of traffic each day can still come short in sales if the visitors find the pricing or the niche affiliate marketing product out of their reach.
Every niche product is priced to meet the needs of certain groups. It is a waste of time to offer high end products to budget seekers. On the other hand offering inexpensive products for people who pride themselves on expensive brands and quality won’t bring sales in either.
Niche affiliate marketing is about more than just knowing you are selling to people who are interested in maintaining their heart health. It also means knowing the lifestyles, age, social and income class of these people.
Your research should go beyond just simple interests and touch on location, age and gender, because these facts help you pick the right affiliate programs for your niche. The first step most people take to failure is not picking the right affiliate program.
Your niche website and your affiliate programs have to match perfectly, because the last thing you want is for people to come to your great looking website and leave to your merchant’s only to find they aren’t interested in or can’t afford the merchant’s offer.
After working hard at building and marketing your website it is frustrating to not get the sales you want because you didn’t do the correct niche research.
This research does not just apply to your website niche but also the niche of your merchant’s site and product. Who would benefit most from what your merchant is offering? Is it your cliental? You need to know if you are serving the same niche.
To increase niche affiliate marketing sales you should have a clear idea of who your niche market is and who your merchant’s target market is. This includes but is not limited to the gender, age, and income level of these individuals. The more information you have about the markets the easier it is to know if you are catering to the same market.

Just about when you think things can’t get any better, Wealthy Affiliate over delivers again. I have been a Wealthy Affiliate Member for over a year now and boy have I seen some changes. So much has been added since the fall of 2007 that it is mind boggling.
The newest addition for bringing in the new year of 2009 is Niche Marketing Software called NicheQ. Everyone knows that the key to affiliate marketing success starts with finding a hungry niche. But that is easier said than done, and if you don’t accomplish that first of all your other efforts will be in vain.
Looking for a niche, market research, can be time consuming and tedious. Most affiliate marketers really struggle in this area. Whenever affiliate marketing I personally struggle with making my limited time available count. Any time I can use a tool that will save some time, I’m all for it. This new niche marketing software does that and more. I am really interested in how it can be used to build my recurring monthly income stream. Having a good plan or strategy really helps when hunting for the niche that will put you over the top.
If you have had any experience making money online you will realize the value of being able to find profitable niches and avoid the losers. I have a friend that makes a total living online in one niche that you would never think would pay and yet he keeps raking it in every month. When he first told me about it several years ago He was even skeptical about how long it was going to last. Guess what, it is still producing for him. It is niches like this that we should be looking for.
NicheQ, Wealthy Affiliate’s new niche marketing software will make the hunting easier, even if your are “Joe Average” like me.
