Finding profitable keywords to work a marketing campaign around has become a heck of a lot more difficult than it used to be. If experienced internet marketers find it tough then what hope do freshman online marketers have.
Using expensive keyword research tools can certainly cut down a lot of time and effort but are you any better off for using them. Yes, that sounds like a strange statement but it’s aimed at the new guy or gal coming online wanting to get a grasp of what internet marketing is all about.
Make no mistake, keyword research is important and if you are new to this business one of the best ways to learn is to simply “get down and dirty” with it.
One of the best tactics in finding a potentially winning keyword to either build a site around or write an article on is to check the forums on that topic. This means doing a check online to see if there are any forums relating to the term you’ve chosen.
For example, let’s choose bamboo. By doing a search for bamboo forums in Google we get a return of almost two million results. We’re obviously not going to check each one of these results and will concentrate on the first few. In fact, for the sake of keeping this article to a reasonable length let’s just check the first one in the results.
What you are aiming for is to look for terms bamboo enthusiasts would use and which are familiar to them. The term bamboo itself is very competitive with almost 38 million results while an “allintitle” search yielded 1.2 million. Too competitive.
Looking through some of the forum posts and one quickly picks up on some of the lingo. Words such as bamboo furniture, bamboo water fountain, bamboo flooring, bamboo sheets and classical bamboo jump out at you. There are many more but you get the picture.
This type of keyword research will yield some good results. When you have a list of words and terms, do an “allintitle” search and if the results return a figure of less than one thousand, then you have a potentially profitable term.
There are plenty of other factors which determine your final choice following your initial keyword research but this method is great for those who are just starting out, who can’t afford an expensive piece of software and who like to become familiar with the topic. Remember, you still need to write content so becoming familiar with a topic is vitally important.

This will show you the number of searches per day. Take the number and multiply it times 30 to get the monthly searches. Simply write the number next to your keyword.
Now check out the keyword competition in Google. Type the keyword in the search bar like this, “keyword” – with the quotes. This will tell you the exact number of sites that are using this keyword.
The numbers vary on whether or not you have a good chance of ranking for certain keywords. For the most part, if the competition is less than 8,000 or so, you should be alright. Honestly, most of the exact matches for the quoted keywords aren’t doing that much to be ranked. It might be a bunch of articles, blog posts, and website pages. With very few of these links holding weight in the Google search results.
Write this down with the daily keyword search results.
Do this with all the keywords. If you have to open up a few more articles, then good. You want atleast 10-15 different keywords to work with.
If you want to find out what kind of products are being sold, just click the links at the bottom of the articles. Follow them until you see a product for sale. Trust me, you will always end up at a product sales page, even if it takes a few clicks.
Also, make sure you keep track of how many AdWords campaigns are running for each of the keywords. On the side of the page, where the AdWords ads are, click on the “more sponsored results” link. It will give a list and number of AdWords campaigns that are running for the keyword selected. Keep track of this. It will tell you if people are spending MONEY for this keyword and niche. Thats probably the most important info you can go on. If someone will pay to advertise for that keyword, than, most likely is making money.
Hopefully the number is at least 10-20 Campaigns.
So now you have data for your keywords. You know the competition, the search volume, and whether or not keywords are making money.
Make sure you list your keywords in order of most searched for keywords.
So whats next?
Now its time to analyze the competition. What are they doing to rank? How can I take over there spot on Google search results? And how many back links does it take to get ranked on page 1?
What you need to do is leave the Google search open. Then open a new tab and open up the Yahoo search page. We are going to find out the number of back links to these sites. (If you have your own way to find out this number than feel free to do so)
Here is how we accomplish our little mission. First, take the first site listed on Google for your 1st keyword. Open it. Then take the URL and copy it, so you can paste it on the Yahoo search page.
What you will do After you paste it in the search bar is this:

Once you have set up the url, click the search button. This will list the exact number of incoming links to the site. We don’t want sites to have 1,000′s of incoming links, that could be tough to overcome. But observe where the links are coming from. Many times , sites will have 100′s or even 1,000′s of “internal” links. Meaning that the links come from inside the actual website. If most of the links are internal, thats good. We can overcome this with some real back links.
You don’t have to look at every single site. But make sure that some where within the first 4-7 sites, there is a real ability for you to rank. If the 3rd or 4th site only has around 20 incoming links, you should be alright.
Make sure you do this for ALL your keywords. If you skip these steps, or don’t fully investigate the keywords and site information, you could end up wasting a whole lot of time. So make sure you stick to it. It will be well worth it in the end. Not to mention, it really does get faster after you do it a few times. When it gets down to it, your really just copying and clicking. It takes a few seconds for each sites info to pop up.
After you have checked out these keywords, you should have a good idea of their profitability. 10 – 15 keywords of research, really wont take long.
